Ethiopia Reads wants to make Bahir Dar a center of literacy excellence!

Applying lessons from the past ten years, ER would like to invest in a cohesive, multi-faceted campaign for children's literacy in Bahir Dar, the beautiful capital city of Ethiopia's Amhara Region and gateway to the headwaters of the Blue Nile.

Cultivating strong literacy practice requires a layering of support mechanisms that reinforce each other to the benefit of the children and families of the city. We propose to launch with three projects:

  •   Expansion and improvement of the school library at Yekatit 23 Primary, our base school in Bahir Dar.
  •   Open three new ER school libraries in the city, in order to create a healthy cluster of model programs and professional practice.
  •   Establish an innovative mobile support services program for reading spaces across Bahir Dar, whether school- or community-based, according to the blueprint of our model program in Addis Ababa.

Yekatit 23 LIBRARY EXPANSION

  •   Government-operated school
  •   Grades 1-8 (AM & PM)
  •   1,100 students (673 girls, 427 boys)

The current school library is operating over capacity due to increased class sizes at the school.  The library addition will be 12x8m.

New Books:              $1,000
New Furniture:        $6,000
Construction:        $25,000

Establish Three New School Libraries

We organize ER libraries into clusters for mutual support and professional dialogue and development.  Bahir Dar could be a center of excellence with the establishment of a cluster of four ER libraries.

Several schools have requested ER help to establish high-quality libraries.

One School Library:   $15,000

Mobile Support Services

The mobile program supports all local partner reading centers with training, mentoring, and support from ER staff.

  • STEP ONE:  Map reading spaces
  • STEP TWO:  Begin regular circuits among reading spaces to train and model practices, support staff and children.

Materials:                $1,500
Staff & Transport:  $6,000
