Ethiopian children deserve safe, inviting spaces in which to read, study, think, learn and connect with books. Since we opened Shola Children’s Library, Ethiopia's first free library for children, we've planted at least one library in every region of Ethiopia. With the support of generous individuals across the world, Ethiopia Reads is moving towards its goal of planting 100 libraries!
We employ a high-standard of excellence in our libraries, so that they are not merely reading rooms but dynamic, interactive, well-organized environments with relevant, high-quality materials. We aim to create libraries that heighten and complement a child’s education and nurture a love of reading and books.
Each library is equipped with attractive, high-quality furniture, educational materials and hundreds of books in Amharic, local Ethiopian languages as well as English. We also provide training and resources to librarians, aides and teachers.
Planting a library through Ethiopia Reads makes a direct and powerful impact on the live of hundreds of children. As many have discovered, a tax-deductible library donation is a wonderful way to celebrate a new addition to a family, honor a loved one, or unite a community group.
Average cost to plant a library: $15,000
(on-ground assessment will determine exact cost)
A model of excellence, an Ethiopia Read's library is an interactive, working facility with first-rate materials for children, including texts that supplement the standard collection development.
Costs associated with planting a library include: high-quality locally-made furniture, custom built to maximize use of each unique space; acquisition of appropriate books; transporting and cataloging of books; and three-years of library management and operational assistance.
Library planters are invited to name the library in honor of their family, place of worship, school, loved one, etc.
