Southern Ethiopia sees great ethnic diversity, beautiful sprawling landscapes, and some of the most fertile lands in the country. But it is remote and has been left behind the nation’s efforts to modernize. Literacy and school enrollment rates trail behind other regions and, out of necessity, Ethiopia Reads has invested significant resources into this under-served region in order to share with them the gift of reading.
Ethiopia Reads (ER) supports children’s literacy through strategies that leverage the power of integrated, continuous programming. We build schools and libraries and train the teachers and librarians. We invest in quality books and language-appropriate materials for our children. And our agency builds awareness within communities and advocates on behalf of literacy professionals. Among international agencies, ER is the most complete provider of literacy programming in the country of Ethiopia.
Access to reading materials is key, that’s why we work tirelessly to bring books to children through schools, community libraries and our unique horse-powered literacy program. Discover our wonderful libraries.
As part of our school support, we offer after-school and family-centered reading tutorials for the earliest grades. We know how important a strong foundation in literacy is to academic success. Find out about our schools here.
Sport is a powerful medium for reaching vulnerable young girls. It provides them with the skills and confidence to chart a course out of poverty and become self-reliant models for other women. Read more about our sports programs.
Our goal is to nurture library managers with professional development seminars that promote sustainability. We want to help them become empowered to create a library that comes to life and makes an impact. Find out about our training efforts.
